Neil Gunn Writing Competition

This biennial competition is organised by The Highland Council and the Neil Gunn Trust; this is the tenth competition.

Purpose of competition:

To celebrate the contribution of Neil Gunn toour literary heritage by encouraging writing about the contemporary world and the place of individuals in it.

2009 Theme: ....'Living with One Another '...:

This theme has been drawn from the following quote and recognises the fact that this tenth competition is taking place in the same year as Homecoming Scotland 2009.

"For at the end of the day, what's all the bother about? Simply about human relations, about how we are to live one with another on the old earth. That's all, ultimately. How to enter:

There are 4 separate sections to the Neil Gunn Writing Competition. The adult sections are open to all writers, the secondary and primary sections are open to pupils at Highland schools and to schools abroad with links to Highland schools.

Adult Prose 1st prize £500, 2nd prize £250, 3rd prize £100

Adult Poetry 1st prize £500, 2nd prize £250, 3rd prize £100

Secondary (S3-6) 1st prize £100, 2nd prize £60, 3rd prize £40

Primary (P5-7) 1st prize £50, 2nd prize £30, 3rd prize £20

One entrant will be judged the overall winner and awarded a residential week at Moniack Mhor Writers' Centre, which is situated near Inverness.
